Organizational Vitality Index
What is the Organizational Vitality Index?
The Organizational Vitality Index is a data-driven composite score designed to provide an integrated picture of a theological school’s organizational vitality. Rather than relying on a single measure, the Index draws together multiple forms of institutional data to help schools see patterns that may be difficult to recognize when individual indicators are considered in isolation. The score is intended to be interpreted within the context, tradition, mission, and vocation of each school. Its primary value is longitudinal, helping an institution understand how its vitality is changing over time and identify areas that may warrant greater attention.
The Organizational Vitality Index is a tool for conversation and discernment about what vitality, success, mission fulfillment, and faithful participation in the mission of God look like for each particular community.
Novare’s understanding of organizational formation provides an important lens for interpreting those patterns. The Index can help a school see where change may be occurring, while organizational formation invites the community to ask what those patterns reveal about the direction in which the institution is being formed. This means attending to the relationship between the future an institution espouses and the structures, practices, relationships, assumptions, and patterns of organizational life that are actually shaping its present and future. Those patterns may support the institution’s stated aspirations, work against them, or orient the organization toward a different end altogether.
A Broader View Across the Community
Across the Novare community, the Index will also provide a longitudinal picture of organizational vitality across participating schools. Aggregated data can help the community explore broader patterns, sharpen its understanding of vitality in theological education, and cultivate shared learning without assuming that vitality looks identical in every institutional context.
